Mal Pope
Mal Pope was born in Brynhyfyd in Swansea, and was discovered by Radio 1 DJ John
Peel as a fresh faced teen musical genius, and was quickly signed up by Elton John’s
newly formed record company Rocket Records. After many years living, performing and
recording on London he decided to move back home to Wales, first becoming a researcher
for BBC Radio Wales, and later a producer. Television followed, with him having his
own show for HTV “The Mal Pope Show”. In 1995 he produced his first musical “Copper
Kingdom” which came to Swansea Grand Theatre in June of that year. Mal wrote the
music to Iris Gower’s words. He has since followed up with theatre successes with
Amazing Grace in 2005 and again in 2006 both performed at The Grand Theatre. In 2007
he wrote a new musical on the life of the boxer Tommy Farr called “The Contender”
to great critical acclaim and starring Mike Doyle in the title role. Mal Pope has
had a fabulous career and he has toured with the likes of Art Garfunkel and Belinda
Carlisle and more recently Merrill Osmond, and has an impressive back catalogue of
his own albums. In 2009 his new musical “Cappuccino Girls” opens and visits Swansea
Grand Theatre and a new version of the title track was recorded by Bonnie Tyler.
