“Swansea's Grand" Theatre Book expected release July 2010! |
The Home Of Theatrical Swansea
"Swansea's Grand" is a book written to celebrate the history of Swansea Theatre and
its impact, and influence in the growth of British theatre. Some of the greatest
theatre impresarios cut their teeth in Swansea. The book has a main focus on Swansea
Grand Theatre which opened in 1897 and is still going strong today, its journey is
charted week by week through its many peaks and troughs and its struggles to compete
with other forms of entertainment as they were developed, from Music Hall, Silent
Movie Cinemas, The Talkies, then radio and television. It has faced extinction on
many, many occasions, and survived unscathed through two World Wars. The success
of Swansea's other theatres is also evaluated in great detail including the Empire
Theatre in Oxford Street, sadly demolished in 1968. Its draw as an entertainment
venue was unrivalled in Swansea during its 57 year history. Artists such as Laurel
And Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, Morecambe and Wise amongst countless others chose to
visit this very palatial Theatre which was part of the Moss-
Societies/Companies/Venues etc.
